Mary Penfold – The Mother of Australian Wine
Born Mary Holt in 1816, Miss Mary Holt married Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold in 1835. They adopted the motto “Pende Valde, Latin for ‘very dependable’ as part of their wedding vows. They set sail from England in 1844, headed for Australia, making a stop-over in France to purchase vines. On arrival to Australia, they settled into Magill, where Mary set about her wine making, helping to start the South Australian Wine Industry, which in turn helped to make the Australian wine industry what it is today. Pende Valde Vineyards draws upon their long family heritage within the Wine Industry to produce high quality wines from the South Australian Wine Region, paying homage to the generations of wine makers before them.
